Friday: It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Friday

While I am still disgusted over how bad the AHL Finals game I went to in Syracuse was, I have been working on a project I would like to display here soon, but it is also a ways away. In the meantime I'm still posting here and at BNG (which has been slow) and I welcomed a new blog promoting school spirit on my campus this week. Today, twelve concepts to amaze you with along with one Madmen entry. Your reminders are also listed below.

COTW June 17-23 vote (ends tonight @ 11:59pm Eastern time)
Logo Comp Top 2 voting (ends tonight @ 11:59pm Eastern time)
"Madmen" entries due (tomorrow @ 11:59pm Eastern time)

--------------------------------------------------------

Madmen Entry:
Derek H.

--------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Stars (Stephen T.)

This would be a good way not to use gold beyond the logo. The white uniforms are fantastic, the black uniform needs only one thing color reversal. In this case,  that means striping as I feel the primary stripe should be green and surrounded in white or keep the primary stripe white, switch the inside black to green and switch the outside to white. However, taking the latter suggestion may require you to adopt the same  pattern for the road whites. The Nike SWIFT template make this team look a little more elegant, gracing with style an 8.5 out of 10.

US National Hockey Team (Gerard)

Gerard has given us what appears to be the start of an international series with two of those today. This one is pretty good, except I don't know that this script is the best one of theirs to use for this jersey design, while it make more sense then the old glory logo. That one would be overkill but this one is too bland it appears to me. A 9 out of 10.

Hamilton Tigers (Bobby P.)

In his Ideal NHL series, Bobby is also taking teams from the past - which I think it's great that he isn't limiting himself to just current teams. This one is spot on except I think I would like to see the helmets reversed or just black (to match the pants). I find it interesting that Steven Stamkos plays for them. Clawing out a 9.5 out of 10.

Idaho Steelheads (Mike S.)

I like this one, it could even pass for the Minnesota Timberwolves if someone did an NBA crossover. Nothing overly exciting, nothing at all terrible either. Welding together an 8 out of 10.

Tampereen Ilves (Jake88)

Continuing with his SM-liiga series, Jake 88 provides us with an interesting striping pattern, similar to ones we've seen on Carolina Hurricane jerseys. He makes it work here and will you look at that funky design on the gloves. An 8.5 out of 10.

Regina Pats (Dylan W.)

Dylan  sticks with the WHL and this one doesn't completely excite me the extra swoosh from the s on the logo make it appear larger than it is. In fact, it almost looks like a wannabe New England Patriots copycat. That grainy blue is back but it looks better, maybe the red is complimenting it better. The NOB and TV numbers are good, but the main numbers are a tad large. The striping is fantastic! An 8 out of 10.

Manchester United FC (Pajo94)

Okay, the logos are over-sized especially with their proximity to the hem striping. I wouldn't recommend using this font, or for that matter, any general computer fonts for the NOB and numbers. And knowing Premier League football the way I do, I'm curious about the alternate as it looks to be more an Aston Villa shirt because of the yoke and middle stripes on the sleeves. The rest of it I get. A 7 out of 10 here.

2014 Stadium Series (Tristan P.)

While I continue to figure out the best way to name individual stadium series concepts, this one has been a common match-up. I understand the reasoning for the color of the Rangers gloves, but it's unnecessary. In fact I have always preferred this shade of blue better than that of the current shade. For the Isles I might reverse the order of the orange and white; else-wise, I'm happy with it. An 8 out of 10.

Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday Night Classic (Jets96)

I have always liked the number font and gusset striping and you can't go wrong with the bolt on the pants. While I'm not fond of the blue cuffs or white part of the sleeves with matching hem design, this one still turned out to be alright. The blue, white, and sliver don't look good on the socks in that orientation either. Perhaps we could also see a blue yoke with a white outline. Just thoughts. Lightning struck with an 8 out of 10.

Lethbridge Hurricanes (Dylan W.)

The team in Lethbridge has disappointed me with their new logo. While it has improved in modernness, it lacks everything else and quite frankly, I detest it with a passion. However, Dylan has turned a negative into a positive by implementing the logo in the striping which embraces the futuristic look. I never have liked numbers being that close to hem striping, but this one is actually where it should be as it is the hem striping that alters appearance. An 8.5 out of 10.

Seattle Metropolitans (Bobby P.)

Here Bobby gives the Metros a new look leaving the traditional tricolor hoops in compliance with generic modern jersey ideas (say the 70s-90s).This one is good but I think a yoke could be needed to break up the green on said colored jersey.red with white outline perhaps. An 8.5 out of 10.

Lahden Pelicans (Jake88)

Another in Jake88's SM-liiga series. As I mentioned, I am not generally fond of such fonts, however it is appropriate as it matches the logo script quite well. I'm even okay with the piping because it adds to the colored jersey. The gold seems out of place, but there is so little of it that it only becomes a minor concern. An 8 out of 10.

Sweden National Hockey Team (Gerard)

We all know that the three crowns are a must when a Sweden concept comes about. My only question here is why the hem and arm stripes don't match. I prefer the triple yellow and would like to see them transferred onto the pants and socks. I'm still undecided if the blue jerseys should use a yellow or blue helmet (leaning towards yellow). An 8.5 out of 10.

--------------------------------------------------------

Well, I would like to accomplish more to send in for you to dissect but me refereeing in Niagara Falls this weekend prevents me from doing so. Keep your eyes peeled for them if and when they show up. Enjoy your weekend!

Friday: We'll Need At Least Six Games

Summer is finally upon us, a sign that hockey season is coming to an end if the season hasn't yet ended (as is the case this year). With an increased workload coming in for my posts here it has become a more planned out process. It's been a great Finals series so far and game five may dictate the remainder of the series regardless if we go back to Chicago for game seven or not. One thing I'd like to not. Congrats to Gerard, who is guaranteed a CotW vote by being the only person to have concepts for this week.

--------------------------------------------------------

As per the usual, I present your reminders below:

COTW June 10-16 vote (ends tonight @ 11:59pm EDT)
Logo Concept Comp entries (due tonight @ 11:59pm EDT)

--------------------------------------------------------

Logo Competition Entries:

Danny R.

Derek H.

--------------------------------------------------------

Fort Wayne Komets (Mike S.)

A league and team I haven't really gotten to cover here yet, I don't see many issues here. The only thing I suggest is to use the same striping size on the pants it doesn't have to be the same pattern necessarily, but I would like to see at least two more stripes. I made a wish for an 8 out of 10.

Buffalo Sabres (Timmy Q.)

I have seen my fair share of goat head jerseys in Buffalo, but this one is rather interesting. While Timmy's execution has improved, there are still some things that could be better. The NOB and number is too spaced and too far down the back, there also aren't any TV numbers. Aside from execution, I don't think a yoke outline is necessary on the road white.Particularly on the same jersey, the choice of outline is a good finish. I got the horns, but didn't get gored - 6.5 out of 10.

Florida St. Univ. (Alex J.)
I don't know what the hem strip is exactly supposed to resemble, but I'm cool with it. However, the sleeves don't match the hem and pants. The logo is a smidge over sized compared to its proximity to the top part of the hem stripe. Else-wise, I'm a fan of this idea. 8 out of 10.

Philadelphia Flyers (Stephen T.)

This is sort of different for the Broad Street Bunch and I think this might work better. An orange alternate may suit this nicely, but this will suffice. I know it wouldn't match the striping, but I would suggest both sets of numbers in orange with the white or black outline on the appropriate jersey. They look fine on the black, but the TV numbers look silly on the white sweater. Maybe a yoke outline could be added? I'm flying away with an 8.5 out of 10.

Dallas Stars (Jets96)

No kidding, an older look Stars in Bettman stripes. As much as the script jersey that were just retired fit those much better even though I thought they were awful sweaters, it does not fit here. For the numbers, I would like both sets of numbers in green with the white or black outline on the appropriate jersey - gold outlines may also work. Else-wise, this may seem like a generic concept to the untrained eye at first glance but it isn't. Maybe we could even test if replacing the gold with green and vice-versa. A 7 out of 10.

Florida Panthers (Jets96)

I like the enthusiasm on this one, but I need the panther breaking the hockey stick. Jets96 is correct in that Florida needs to better incorporate the yellow, but it isn't done the most aesthetic way on the road white only because of the colored in  matching hem and socks. I would like to see the TV numbers a might larger, but that doesn't take too much away from this concept. I've clawed out a 7.5 out of 10.

Atlanta Thrashers (Ben S.)

This particular uniform replaces the "ATLANTA" armstripe uniform and gives a matching home jersey to the road sweater. If I am to presume that this is done in MS Paint, it's an alright to above average job (better than I would have done for anything with this template). While I like the idea, I would like to see a back to this which might be coming at a later time and I can't judge that now. This uniform is missing TV numbers, unfortunately. Slap this stuff on in Illustrator, Paint.net, Photoshop, or any other software and it may be able to enhance the specific detail to it. A 7.5 out of 10.

This is the first of two in Bobby's "Ideal NHL" series. The only thing that significantly bothers me is the logo. Not that it's a roundel, not that it's Boston, but that it's too subtle for modern Bruins hockey. It actually is a slight down grade, but nothing too fancy is necessary. With the current logo or adding accents to the one on these jersey will do just fine. If the separating stripe is widened a little more on the road white to separate the bottom of the sleeve from the actual striping, then I actually wouldn't mind the black being there. A 7.5 out of 10.

Edmonton Oilers (Brandon C.)

The color arrangement for the stripes are what break this concept. While it looks great on the ancillary equipment, it doesn't go on the jersey except the number outline. I would switch the white and orange to trade places. That unique yoke outline gives this a brownie point for originality on a jersey part that is difficult to be innovative with as such few teams have personalized yokes. Despite the color arrangement of the striping, this can still  spring an 8 out of 10.

Ottawa Senators (Dylan W.)

As cool as these are, they look more like soccer jerseys with the faintness of some of the detail. Make all of those more visible - the double red, double gold and even a more distinguishable shade of gray. Simply put, a 9 out of 10.

Dallas Stars (Gerard)

I like the jerseys. I don't like the crest logo on the alternate, never have (I think I have seen it before on concepts) I keep finding myself baffled as to how Maurice is able to pull off his style of putting concepts together without duplicating someone else's concept. And this isn't even his best of today, but this one is pretty good too. The only couple things with this one are that the pants from the alternate should be the only pair and I need larger TV numbers. A 9 out of 10.

Carolina Hurricanes (Andy C.)

I understand why the warning flags are only on one jersey, but it doesn't match the home uniform. To be quite honest this is not a Canes concept. These will be the new Team Canada jerseys in 2016, with the necessary logo swapping of course. But I do like it and I would like to see them used over their newly released uniforms. An 8.5 out of 10

Minnesota Wild (Gerard)

This is not bad for another one of Gerard's works, this actually has the most probable potential of being produced of the concepts he has drawn up. I have been up and down with the wild and their look today it isn't too shabby. An 8.5 out of 10.

Buffalo Sabres (Bobby P.)

The striping was "ideal" for the 40th Anniversary alternates, and it is certainly ideal in this concept. Add a gold yoke outline to the to both jerseys even though there hasn't traditionally been one on the colored jersey. A 9 out of 10.

Tampa Bay Lightning (Gerard)

With this concept we yet a gain continue Gerard's "Edgifying the Nineties" collection and I love this one too, but it's not quite perfect. I need larger TV numbers. A welcomed 9.5 out of 10.

--------------------------------------------------------

Well now that the NBA Finals are over, there will be even more emphasis on how the Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy in all of sports to win. Especially when this series has already broken the record for most Finals OT games. Anyway to you, I bid adieu until next week.

Friday: This is Ranger Smith in an Empire State of Mind

Greetings and salutations all across the fruited plain for another addition of HJC Fridays. The Stadium Series and international clubs will be our primary focus today. All of the Stadium Series Concepts feature the Rangers from MSG. Another busy Friday is upon us, so lets get down to the wire!

--------------------------------------------------------

As always, your reminders have been provided below.

COTY-May vote (ends tonight @ 11:59pm EST)
COTW June 3-9 vote (ends tonight@ 11:59pm EST)
"Untouchables" Maple Leafs Top 5 vote (ends tonight @ 11:59pm EST)

--------------------------------------------------------

Czech Republic (Bobby P.)

Bobby's first entry today, continuing his international series provides us with a traditional look. Can you say Czech-mate? You can't argue with this one. I see everything as Czech affiliated and cannot picture it else-wise. I'll never be used to this template, but it's merely an oversight. Well done for an 8 out of 10.

Switzerland (Bobby P.)

The big thing with this one is that I'd like to see a little more black accenture here other than the helmet and pants.  Again, the template throws me off but nothing that isn't taking away from the concept. I might add an additional white outline to the numbers and it could be suggested that a hem stripe could be used as well. I'm targeting a 7.5 in my cross-hairs.

Latvia (Bobby P.)

Before I get to my dissection, ESPN text alerts broke news around 10:45 AM EDT today that Oilers prospect Kristians Pelss is missing and feared drowned in his Latvian home. We hope all is okay.
This concept is ideal for the Latvians, that is, with the exception of not using  the colored version of the shield. As many may know, it is tough (especially in black and white) to created a bi-colored uniform as it limits your possibilities. Even if the jersey is bi-colored but has a flamboyant crest, I feel it significantly enhances the uniform. Maybe go Habs style and use  the flag as a chest stripe with a logo in the middle (just a thought). This is a working 7 out of 10.

Boston Bruins (Gerard)

Gerard sends in the first of three concepts today and lone 90s Edge series submission, and boy is it a doozie. This is great, I always loved the original jersey, even "Winnie the Pooh" - that is until I saw it up close and personal some years ago. What I would like to see is an superimposed version of the bear in the current alternate logo replacing this and this jersey can return from the dead. I've so far enjoyed this series from Gerard and am looking forward to the rest. A 9 out of 10 and a CotW nom from me.

Québec Remparts (Canadydy&Lecavalier25)

The first of two Remparts concepts, this one is a little bit more variable of the two. My  first thing is that I would prefer the hem stripe to match the socks and sleeves, even though it may change the layout of the jersey completely. Unless it is in red and the front of the jersey is in black, there is no need for a shoulder yoke outline. That would also require the outside  panels to be one color, particularly black. I know it may be in an attempt to match the numbers, but the name on the back seems illegible with the outline and should be in white only. Other than the naming thing, I like the concept except the striping throws it our of proportion. With the proper adjustments, this can work - without having to re-align everything mentioned above. A 6.5 out of 10 while we wait for their new arena to be finished.

Québec Remparts (J3)

As I said upstairs, matching striping would be preferred as it alters the alignment. However the outline on the name lettering works here as it is much more subtle. The Remparts could use a new look including the logo as they change arenas if they ever finish building it. A 7.5 out of 10, the other 2.5 helps to replace the bird-head logo.

Edmonton Oil Kings (Gerard)

We stay in the CHL but return to Gerard  as we take a look at Edmonton's Oil Kings. While the home and road set are very well oriented, I'm not quite sure on the retro looking alternate. While I do like that the alternate is primarily yellow, the home and roads need a new primary logo. As many CHL teams do, they have newer logos that appear to be from the 1970s or 80s. For that, something is missing here, but I can't put a finger on it. An 8 out of 10 here.

2014 Stadium Series - NY Rangers/New Jersey Devils (Phil B.)

The first of a pair from Phil, the Devils are one of the foes the team from MSG will face. The font for the crest of the New York uniform I never felt had a rightful place, this isn't a rightful place. the number on the back of the Devils sweater is a smidge too wide. I'm not completely sure of a black Devils kit though.  Those things aside, there aren't any issues - 7 out of 10.

Pittsburgh Penguins (Jets96)

Here's an interesting idea - mix the "Robo-Penguin and double blue and see what you get. Quite frankly, I'm not a fan. Even though I don't like the modern Penguins and the double blue, Jets96 has made a combination of eras work here on the home and road. This one is still giving me mixed signals, a 7.5 out of 10.

2014 Stadium Series - NY Rangers/NY Islanders (Phil B.)

Okay so we have identified the issue with the rangers uniform in the other concept, now take a look at the Isles. I forgot to previously mention the coll red pants for the Rangers. I do like the orange, I miss the old alternate they had. The championship stripes are implemented, but I don't think they are best utilized in this way.  The lighthouse logo is recolored and brought on as a shoulder patch, nice touch. Over all pretty solid, an 8 out of 10.

Hershey Bears (Gerard)

I like the choice of logo, although the vintage white (sand as they call it) throws me off, this is passable. I would however like a thicker outline on the logo of the alternate sweater. I absolutely love how the yoke matches the striping. With an 8.5 out of 10 they as sweet as the chocolate bars.

2014 Stadium Series - NY Rangers/NY Islanders (Andrew G.)

The first thing I noticed was the "New York" across the chest, very road-like. However the classic yoke pattern is gone, oh well. I would also like to see some white separating the inner stripe from the outer ones on the sleeves and hem. Could we add the championship stripes somewhere for the Isles? An 8 out of 10 is in order.

Friday: Around the NHL (and Hartford)

A hearty high-ho to all of you this Friday as we see that the Conference finals are just what the doctor ordered so far with the last four Stanley Cup champions battling it out. Jets96 and Scott M. have sent in a pair of concepts each in addition to the others. I'm disappointed in the Canes and am okay with the Stars who have improved as a result of their re-branding. I would say more on both, but there's work to be done. Following today's featured artist we will be starting off with a Stars contest as prompted by their uniform unveiling.

Rosy Jerseys

--------------------------------------------------------

Today, White Lightning has sen in his profile card to us!

--------------------------------------------------------

DAL Stars (Brian B.)

I think these uniforms are even better than what was introduced to us on Tuesday! The manner in which this set is presented helps a subtle transition from the old branding to the new without switching the home jersey color. My only things are that the entire sleeve on the roads should be white and the center stripe should be green and the outer two white on the home kit. A Modano out of Morrow is in store here, 9 out of 10.

NSH Predators (Tyler G.)

Ah the guitar strings, nothing says Preds jersey better than that (the checker pattern comes close). I like where my co-blogger is going with this, but the striping seems a might too simple with the striping. Perhaps the checkering wouldn't be a bad idea here. Adding the guitar pick logo as a shoulder patch is also a nice touch to this concept. If these were their inaugural kits, it would seem perfect. With predatory-like instinct, an 8 out of 10.

WSH Capitals (Mike S.)

Although it has a slight Rangers look, I find the use of stripes from Old Glory very intriguing. But it works, so it adds to the concept in this case. This would probably be an alternate jersey for the time being as the Caps have a red home jersey in place. The main thing here is that the TV numbers don't clash with the arm stripes due to the placement on the yoke. The US Presidents should be happy about this one, 8.5 out of 10.

MTL Canadiens (Stéphane)

Stéphane is absolutely right about the "cookie cutter" aspect. However, I hope we never see the Habs with such a logo for a club with such a rich history. The logo I think makes the chest stripe seem like it's too much. Move it down to the hem and we might have something, but I'm not completely ready for this one. A 7.5 out of 10

HTF Wolf Pack (Jon)

I'm glad the Wolf Pack branding is back. That alone is a celebration of sorts. The logo is slightly over-sized as well as the name and number on the back. At the same time, the TV numbers are slightly too small. I'm not a big fan of the white stars on the road jersey striping, they need to be colored. What intrigues me about this set is the gray alternate. What if their NHL affiliate New York Rangers went to a gray jersey like the old "Lady Liberty" practice jerseys. With execution errors, this is still a decent set - 7 out of 10.

CHI vs. PIT 2014 Stadium Series (Michael G.)

I don't generally like most of the jerseys used in the Winter Classic games, but Michael has at least madde one presentable. This look suits the Blackhawks just fine except i wold like the number on back to be a little more legible with a better outline. While I don't miss the Penguins baby blue, the color distribution is my main concern. The number outline blends in too much with the "gold" regardless of the order. Meanwhile, the hem trim and cuff trim  on the Pens jersey should match the bottom of the sleeves and hem, even though you pulled it off very well for the Hawks jersey. I'm freezing my vote in at an 8 out of 10.

NY Rsngers (Jon)

Red pants, red jersey perhaps? Not here, but Jon changes the striping that does not catch my affection, or at least the hem stripe. The biggest surprise to me is the non-retention of the classic striping on the road yoke. I cannot picture it even though it is right in front of me. I think Lady Liberty is the saving grace for this one. Hey, it looks much better than it would if this were in the style of the WNBA's New York Liberty. Freedom has rung, a 7 out of 10.

LA Kings Sat. Night Classic (Jets96)

One of two for today in his Saturday Night Classic Series, Jets96 presents us with one for the Kings. This logo always minded me of the crown you might see on a checkers piece. Too fancy for a logo, but many in the sports world were when this came out - lots of detail.I don't really have an opinion on this one good or bad, but comparing it to similar retro jerseys, it's predominantly spot on. The Kings are crowned an 8 out of 10.

UTC Flames (Scott M.)

This is one of two concepts Scott has sent into us and both of the ones in today's post were featured on his blog a little bit ago. Definitely resemblant of the affiliate Calgary Flames. Could they possibly sport the look Scott has given the AHL team. I'm not sure completely on the logo, but it works. Firing up an 8 out of 10.

WPG Jets (Stephen T.)

I like this one but It also sort of looks like it could be a Jackets jersey if you switch the logo to the one on th Columbus alternate. Stephen makes double blue look good, something that is hard to do with any jersey. If it is to be more distinguishable from Columbus, it is missing something. Also, a minor note is that I would prefer the TV numbers to have a stronger outline.  A 7.5 out of 10.

BRM Beast (Scott M.)

This color scheme is one of the most difficult to work with, but Scott has made a respectable concept. He eve aligned the name on the back to resemble the script in the logo to some extent. I have no complaints here what so ever other than the colors, but Scott can't do anything about that. A 9 out of 10.

CAR Hurricanes SNC (Jets 96)

Jets 96 does beautifully with this one. Even though it doesn't have the classic flag striping, I'm happy with this one very much. Not much else to say, 9 out of 10.
